Dan Campbell humorously explains what Alex Anzalone needs to do to get on the field.

Linebacker Alex Anzalone is nearing a return, and head coach Dan Campbell gave a humorous response when asked what Anzalone needs to do

to play on Sunday night.

Anzalone, limited in practice on Wednesday, was included in the Detroit Lions’ first Week 18 injury report.

His 21-day activation window from injured reserve is open, making it possible for him to play this week. It would be his first game since breaking his forearm in Week 11 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Campbell highlighted Thursday’s practice as a key factor in determining Anzalone’s availability for Sunday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

“He’ll be out there running around today, so we’ll see how he does,” Campbell said. “Tomorrow will be a big day for us to evaluate where he’s at.”

While ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Anzalone has a “realistic chance” to play, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggested earlier in the day that Anzalone would remain sidelined for the Vikings game.

On Thursday morning, during his weekly interview on 97.1 The Ticket’s “Costa and Jansen with Heather,” Campbell was asked what challenges Anzalone needs to overcome to return to the field.

True to his personality, Campbell joked, “He’s got to be able to do a handstand. A handstand press-up and a version of a jumping jack on his hands. If he can do that, we’re playing him.”

Having Anzalone back for the regular season finale would benefit a Lions defense that has struggled in his absence.

However, this return would come earlier than the original 6-8 week recovery estimate for his injury. Ensuring Anzalone is at full strength for the playoffs may take precedence.

With the Lions vying for a first-round bye, Sunday night’s game holds significant weight. A healthy Anzalone could be crucial for their postseason success, so his potential early return has added importance.

As Detroit prepares for Week 18, Campbell’s lighthearted remarks reflect his confidence in Anzalone’s recovery while emphasizing the team’s focus on long-term goals.

Whether or not Anzalone plays Sunday, his return could provide a boost as the Lions aim for playoff momentum.
