The Detroit Lions have faced difficulties containing mobile quarterbacks this season.

While San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy isn’t often grouped with the top dual-threat passers, he has shown the ability to make plays with his legs.

Notably, he tallied five carries for 48 yards against Detroit in last year’s NFC Championship game.

To succeed, the Lions will need to keep Purdy in the pocket. Still, he’s recorded 468 rushing yards and seven touchdowns this season.

Given Detroit’s struggles against mobile quarterbacks, PlayiLottery lead writer Drew Ellis predicts Purdy will exceed his rushing total, set at 18.5 yards (-110) via FanDuel Sportsbook.

“It’s hard to gauge what to expect from the Lions today. With this game having minimal impact on the No. 1 seed and Sunday’s matchup with Minnesota looming, Detroit may avoid unnecessary risks or aggression,” Ellis said.

“San Francisco, dealing with injuries and missing the playoffs, may also lack motivation. However, their QB is playing for a lucrative new contract. In the NFC Championship, Purdy’s mobility was pivotal in San Francisco’s victory over Detroit.”

Purdy has surpassed 18.5 rushing yards in seven games this season, including a season-high 56 yards on eight carries against the Cowboys.

With Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason sidelined for Monday’s game, the 49ers will turn to Isaac Guerendo as their lead running back.

This could prompt head coach Kyle Shanahan to incorporate designed runs for Purdy alongside his scrambles.

“A few weeks ago, Josh Allen’s mobility helped the Bills defeat Detroit,” Ellis noted. “The Lions’ thin linebacker corps struggles against mobile quarterbacks, creating defensive challenges. I believe Purdy will find success on the ground regardless of the game’s final outcome.”
