Detroit police are taking extra precautions ahead of the highly anticipated Lions-Vikings game this Sunday, as security concerns rise following recent incidents across the country.
After a truck crashed into a New Year’s celebration in New Orleans, killing 15 and injuring 33, and a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, Detroit authorities are heightening their security measures.
The game, which will see the 14-2 Detroit Lions compete against the 14-2 Minnesota Vikings for the NFC North Division, has made national attention, adding to the urgency of safety.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison
confirmed that additional security protocols will be in place at Ford Field, where the game is set to take place.
Although Bettison declined to share specific details due to security reasons, he did reassure the public that there are no known active threats against the game.
Bettison also emphasized that law enforcement partners, including the FBI, Homeland Security, Michigan State Police, and the Wayne County sheriff’s office, are collaborating to ensure a safe environment for fans and players alike.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan echoed Bettison’s statements, confirming that the security presence would be highly visible to the public, as well as some measures not immediately apparent.
While the team of law enforcement agencies has been working closely together, Bettison also reached out to regional authorities to boost resources.
He called Sheriff Bouchard of Oakland County and requested additional deputies to support the operation.
Bettison added that even Macomb County sheriff’s deputies would assist during the event.
To further enhance safety, Bettison explained that his department would have air coverage, marine units, and ground units in place.
Traffic patterns around the stadium would also be adjusted to better handle the influx of fans and ensure smooth movement.
These actions are part of a broader strategy to prevent any potential issues and ensure a safe atmosphere for the high-stakes game.
The match will determine the NFC’s top seed, with the winner finishing the regular season with a 15-2 record.
