Five potential replacements for Ben Johnson as Lions offensive coordinator.

If Ben Johnson secures a head coaching role, here are five candidates who could step in as the Lions’ next offensive coordinator.

As anticipated, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is in high demand for head coaching positions. However, he has been strategic about the opportunities he pursues.

The New York Jets and New Orleans Saints, both with openings, didn’t request interviews with him, likely understanding he had minimal or no interest in their positions.

Johnson’s four head coaching interviews were scheduled across two days: the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders on Friday, followed by the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

Although Johnson withdrew from head coaching considerations the last two offseasons, it’s not guaranteed he will leave Detroit this year—or ever.

His approach reflects a clear intent to target only roles he truly desires.

Should Johnson depart, head coach Dan Campbell will need to find a replacement.

It’s reasonable to assume Campbell is already preparing for this possibility. Johnson, in turn, has likely communicated openly with Campbell about his plans.

With that in mind, let’s examine potential candidates who could fill the role if Johnson moves on, a scenario that remains uncertain until confirmed.

Tanner Engstrand is one standout candidate. His career trajectory with the Lions mirrors Johnson’s path.

He progressed from offensive assistant in 2020 to offensive quality control coach in 2021, then tight ends coach and passing game coordinator in 2022, and has served as passing game coordinator for the past two seasons.

Engstrand, 42, boasts an extensive coaching history, beginning in 2005 as a graduate assistant under Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego.

He stayed there until 2017, holding roles as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach during his final five years.

In 2018, Engstrand reunited with Harbaugh as an offensive analyst at Michigan.

He later became offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the DC Defenders in the 2020 iteration of the XFL.

Engstrand’s future may hinge on Johnson’s decisions. If Johnson leaves and takes Engstrand with him, it could impact the Lions’ plans. Regardless, Engstrand is an emerging talent to watch.
