In 2024, the defense of the Detroit Lions has been outstanding, permitting merely 20.1 points per game and 98.4 rushing yards per game in the regular season, with both metrics placing them in the NFL’s top ten. Detroit triumphed over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 18 to secure the NFC North championship and the top seed in the conference, granting a first-round bye and home-field advantage for the entire postseason.

It’s impressive that the Lions’ defense has been so strong this season, considering the many injuries the unit has faced. Aaron Glenn’s team has suffered several critical injuries in 2024, losing key starters like starting cornerback Carlton Davis. The veteran broke his jaw in the team’s Week 15 game against the Buffalo Bills, and head coach Dan Campbell does not anticipate Davis rejoining the lineup for the playoffs

The previous Tampa Bay Buccaneer was having a strong season prior to his injury and will enter unrestricted free agency this offseason. Should Detroit fail to keep Davis during free agency, DraftKings Network’s Blake Krass forecasts that the team will choose Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

“The Lions boasted the strongest offense in the NFL this season, making it probable that they will aim for a defensive player in the draft,” wrote Krass. “They had an outstanding run defense but needed assistance in the secondary, indicating that Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos would be an excellent choice.” This season, he was a first-team All-SEC player and has the potential to make an immediate impact for the Lions.

Amos had a remarkable 2024 season with the Rebels, recording three interceptions and deflecting 13 passes. The 22-year-old also permitted only a 51.6% completion rate on 62 targets and a passer rating of 54.5 when he was targeted

Here is additional information about Amos from Keith Sanchez of The Draft Network

If the Lions let Davis walk in free agency this offseason, replacing the 28-year-old with Amos would be a savvy move from general manager Brad Holmes. The senior cornerback would immediately step in as the starter and give Detroit two future cornerstones at the position, as 2024 first-round pick Terrion Arnold has had a promising rookie campaign.
