(CBS DETROIT) — Although the Detroit Lions (15-2) have secured a first-round playoff bye as the NFC’s top seed, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson have been actively conducting head coach interviews.
Aaron Glenn
Glenn was appointed to spearhead the defense on Jan. 19, 2021, only a day before the team brought in head coach Dan Campbell. This season represents his 11th year coaching in the NFL.
On Thursday, the New York Jets spoke with Glenn about their head coaching position, followed by the New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders on Friday.
Glenn is set to have a virtual meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears on Sunday.
The New England Patriots sought to interview Glenn; however, he allegedly declined their request. It’s not clear why he declined the Patriots.
Ben Johnson
In 2019, Johnson became an offensive quality control coach for the Lions. Following three seasons of switching between positions within the organization, he received a promotion to offensive coordinator.
Detroit topped the NFL in touchdowns this season, and for each of the last three seasons, it has ranked in the top 5 for scoring.
Last year, Johnson attracted the attention of teams in search of a head coach, but he ultimately chose to stay with the team.
The New England Patriots spoke with Johnson on Friday, and he was set to meet with the Las Vegas Raiders later that same day.
On Saturday, Johnson had meetings with the Jaguars and Bears.
All interviews with Glenn and Johnson need to take place online since the top-seeded Lions are preparing for the playoffs.
