In college football, unpredictability reigns supreme. Declaring any team’s roster finalized months before the season begis  is often futile. Even constructing a depth chart so far in advance is a gamble, especially in the era of the transfer portal and NIL incentives, where rosters frequently undergo dramatic transformations.

For the BYU Cougars, a new transfer portal window opens from April 16 to April 25, shortly after spring practices conclude. Historically, this has been a time when players not fitting into the team’s plans seek opportunities elsewhere.

What’s Known About BYU Football in 2025

BYU concluded 2024 with an 11-2 record, capping off the season with a dominant 36-14 victory over Colorado in the Alamo Bowl. The Cougars are likely to enter 2025 ranked in the top 25, possibly even the top 15.

“We’re excited about the momentum we’ve built,” head coach Kalani Sitake said after the Alamo Bowl. “We’re celebrating our seniors, but this is a fantastic step forward for our program.”

Despite some key losses, including safety Crew Wakley and defensive end Aisea Moa, BYU has retained a core group of players expected to make an impact in 2025. This is a testament to the culture Sitake has established in Provo, alongside the contributions of his coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Jay Hill.

Transfer Activity and Roster Adjustments

While several former Cougars have found new homes, such as receiver Kody Epps (Western Kentucky) and defensive end Aisea Moa (Michigan State), others are still in the portal. BYU, in turn, has been active, securing commitments from notable players like tight end Carsen Ryan (Utah) and defensive end Tausili Akana (Texas).

Additionally, thanks to eligibility rulings, a few key players from 2024 may return, including offensive lineman Caleb Etienne, receiver Darius Lassiter, and running back Hinckley Ropati. Their potential return could bolster an already solid roster.

Position-by-Position Breakdown

Quarterback:
Jake Retzlaff, who shined in 2024 despite occasional struggles, is the clear starter for 2025. The battle for the backup spot will feature Treyson Bourguet and McCae Hillstead.

Running Back:
LJ Martin will lead the running back room again after a strong 2024 season. While BYU might explore the portal for depth, promising young players like Sione I. Moa and Pokaiaua Haunga are ready to step up.

Wide Receivers and Tight Ends:
Chase Roberts’ decision to return is a significant boost. Alongside him, Keelan Marion, Parker Kingston, and emerging talents like JoJo Phillips provide depth. The tight end position, however, is in flux, with Utah transfer Carsen Ryan expected to play a vital role.

Offensive Line:
BYU’s offensive line saw improvements under coach TJ Woods in 2024. With returning contributors and incoming transfers like Andrew Gentry, the unit should remain a strength.

Defensive Line:
The defensive line faces significant turnover, losing stalwarts like Tyler Batty and Logan Lutui. However, the additions of Keanu Tanuvasa and Tausili Akana through the portal offer promise.

Linebackers:
Harrison Taggart and Isaiah Glasker anchor a deep and talented linebacker corps. Jack Kelly’s potential return would further solidify the group.

Secondary:
The secondary will need to replace standout cornerbacks Jakob Robinson and Marque Collins. However, talented returners like Tanner Wall and Raider Damuni, along with emerging corners, offer hope for continuity.

Projected Roster Overview

Key Departures:

  • Offense: Connor Pay, Caleb Etienne, Darius Lassiter, Kody Epps, and others.
  • Defense: Tyler Batty, Jakob Robinson, Aisea Moa, and more.

Key Returners:

  • Offense: Jake Retzlaff, LJ Martin, Chase Roberts, and a strong offensive line core.
  • Defense: Harrison Taggart, Isaiah Glasker, and a deep safety group.

Key Transfers and Freshmen:
Notable additions include TE Carsen Ryan, DE Tausili Akana, and freshman RB Cale Breslin.

With a mix of returning talent, impactful transfers, and promising newcomers, BYU’s 2025 roster closely resembles its successful 2024 squad. Expectations are high as the Cougars aim to build on their momentum and compete at the highest level.
