Back in Action: Lions’ Montgomery Takes a Backseat to Gibbs for Postseason Push

David Montgomery’s recent absence from the NFL due to an MCL injury coincided with his teammate Jahmyr Gibbs stepping into the spotlight as the Lions’ go-to running back. With Montgomery now returning to the lineup, questions have arisen about how the Detroit Lions will manage their backfield dynamics.

On Tuesday, the sixth-year veteran spoke publicly for the first time since sustaining his injury in Week 15 during a loss to the Buffalo Bills. His comments not only addressed his return but also shed light on his mindset during recovery.

Although it was just a walkthrough practice, Montgomery expressed gratitude for the chance to contribute to his team again. Reflecting on the injury reports that circulated, he clarified some misconceptions about his condition.

“There were speculations about surgery being a possibility or that my injury was career-ending. Honestly, no one really had all the facts,” Montgomery shared.

“When the media said I was getting surgery, that was news to me because I didn’t know about it myself. But I’ve always trusted in my preparation and my faith. Knowing who my God is gives me confidence to overcome anything.”

Montgomery credited his faith for guiding him through this challenging time, emphasizing that his recovery journey wasn’t solely about him. “I give all the praise to God. He has a plan for me, and I trust that I’m where I’m supposed to be. It’s not about my timing but His.”

During Montgomery’s three-game absence, Gibbs emerged as the Lions’ primary offensive weapon.

The rookie running back delivered standout performances, amassing 365 rushing yards, five touchdowns, and 13 receptions for 122 yards, plus an additional receiving touchdown.

His efforts culminated in a stellar Week 18 outing against the Minnesota Vikings, where he scored all the Lions’ touchdowns and brought his season total to 20—leading the league in that category.

For the Lions, the tandem of Montgomery and Gibbs has been a cornerstone of their offense for the past two seasons. However, Gibbs’ late-season surge has demonstrated his potential as a dominant, game-changing talent.

Recognizing this, Montgomery seems ready to play a supporting role if necessary. “Jah is special.

He’s a generational talent,” Montgomery said of Gibbs. “I didn’t expect anything less from him.

He’s proven himself time and again, and I’m here to support him however I can. This is his moment.”

As the Lions prepare to face the Washington Commanders in Saturday’s divisional playoff game, Montgomery’s return could provide much-needed depth and relief for Gibbs, who has shouldered a significant workload.

Despite his extended absence, Montgomery assured reporters that he’s fully recovered and ready to contribute without limitations.

“There’s no pitch count for me,” Montgomery said. “No extra precautions are needed. I’m ready to go out there and do my part.”

Discussing his mindset during recovery, Montgomery explained that he focused on staying positive and blocking out external noise. “I had to lock in and silence the world’s distractions,” he said.

“Every day was an opportunity to improve, no matter what happened the day before. As long as I woke up each day, I had the chance to make progress.”

Montgomery’s rehab process involved strengthening his knee and breaking down scar tissue, which he described as physically demanding but necessary.

“It was tough, but I knew it was all part of the process. I’m grateful to be back and ready to play again.”

Known as the Lions’ “tone setter,” Montgomery has always prided himself on his dedication to the game. He views football as more than just a sport; it’s a lifeline that has shaped his journey.

“This game has done so much for me,” Montgomery reflected. “It saved my life in many ways, and I feel a deep responsibility to give back to it. People see me as a tone setter, but that’s just me showing respect for the game.”

As Montgomery prepares to rejoin the Lions’ playoff campaign, his role may evolve, but his commitment remains unwavering.

Whether as a starter or a complementary piece to Gibbs, Montgomery’s focus is on helping his team succeed and continuing to honor the game he loves.
