“Third Time’s the Charm? Za’Darius Smith Sets Sights on Winning a Ring”

Q&A: Za’Darius Smith Aiming for Super Bowl Glory on Third Try

Za’Darius Smith shared his thoughts with Lions OnSI about his playoff journey.

Veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith has invigorated the Detroit Lions’ pass rush.

Since being acquired at the trade deadline from the Cleveland Browns, Smith has energized the injury-hit defense on and off the field. With the Lions’ Divisional Round clash against Washington looming Saturday, Smith is focused on winning a championship.

Smith has reached the NFC Championship game twice before. This time, he hopes his third attempt will finally lead to a Super Bowl victory.

Speaking with Lions OnSI on Wednesday, Smith discussed the playoffs, Aaron Glenn’s impact, and more.

Questions and answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.

How are you feeling about the playoff game this Saturday?

Smith: “I’m pumped, man. It’s not my first time, but I’m ready. I faced this team back in Cleveland, so I know their o-line and offense. I’m excited to get going.”

How did the bye week help you?

Smith: “It gave me time to recover, man. After 10 years in the game, bye weeks mean a lot. Spent time with family, soaked up some sun, and now I’m recharged and ready.”

How does it feel to achieve your team’s goals this season?

Smith: “It’s huge. I joined midseason, but I bought into Dan Campbell’s vision. We got it done, and now it’s about staying 1-0 this week.”

What impact has Aaron Glenn had on you?

Smith: “He’s put me in the right spots to succeed. Even with injuries hitting us, he strategized to keep me effective. He studied my strengths and used them to help me impact games.”

What makes Glenn a strong head coaching candidate?

Smith: “His playing experience helps him understand us players. Coaches like Dan and Glenn know what we go through, especially with physical demands. That connection makes them great leaders.”

How has Glenn set you up for success?

Smith: “He creates favorable matchups for me. I’m versatile, so he finds ways to get me one-on-one opportunities. If a plan doesn’t work, he adjusts. That flexibility is key.”

What’s crucial to containing mobile quarterbacks?

Smith: “It’s about disciplined rush lanes and teamwork. Staying in gaps, leveling rushes, and adapting to protections are essential. Against mobile guys like Lamar, you’ve got to bring your best.”

Are you looking forward to facing a rookie quarterback?

Smith: “I don’t focus on that. My job is to beat the guy in front of me. I’ve faced him before, and it’s great he’s helping his team. But we’re bringing the pressure.”

What would a deep playoff run mean to you?

Smith: “It’s massive. I’ve been close twice in Green Bay but fell short. This third shot feels special. I want that Lombardi Trophy and the ring, no doubt.”
