The Detroit Lions continue to face setbacks. After being upset by the Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs, they’ve now lost Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets’ head coaching position, following Ben Johnson’s departure for the Chicago Bears’ head coach opening. Both Glenn, the Lions’ former defensive coordinator, and Johnson, their former offensive coordinator, were considered prime head coaching candidates this offseason. Less than a week after their season ended, both have secured new jobs. This will undoubtedly place a strain on Dan Campbell as he works to rebuild his now-thin coaching staff. While the players likely didn’t want to see Glenn and Johnson leave, rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold expressed his support for the Jets’ new head coach after the news broke. “Couldn’t be happier for you coach thanks for everything u taught me in year 1,” Arnold posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Glenn had been Detroit’s defensive coordinator since 2021, and after receiving some interest as a head coach in recent years, his success with the Lions’ struggling defense in 2024 made him a top candidate. Following the departure of Rober by int Saleh, the Jets are hoping Glenn can turn their defense around. Arnold spent just one season working with Glenn after being drafted 24th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, but his development under the experienced coach was evident. Arnold’s durability was essential, as he played in all 16 games for Detroit during a season where their defense saw many changes in personnel. Glenn’s exit will undoubtedly have an effect on Detroit, especially Arnold, as he has only played under Glenn in his brief NFL career. With Glenn gone, Campbell must act quickly to find his replacement.
