The Texans are expected to be one of the teams seeking a new offensive coordinator. Bobby Slowik has left Houston, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Slowik’s value increased throughout his six years with the 49ers. Throughout that period, he occupied various positions, such as pass game coordinator from 2021 to 2022. When DeMeco Ryans took over as the Texans’ head coach, Slowik was one of the personnel who moved with him from San Francisco to Houston.
In his inaugural year as a coordinator and play-caller, Slowik managed an offense that achieved average statistics regarding both yards and points. The Texans’ rushing attack was lacking, yet an outstanding first season from quarterback C.J. Stroud guided the team to the divisional round of the playoffs. Slowik was one of the most sought-after candidates for head coaching.
The 37-year-old had meetings with the Panthers, Titans, and Seahawks last offseason. Slowik was a candidate for the Falcons’ and Commanders’ positions as well, but ultimately he stayed in Houston for 2024. In the recent campaign, there was a decline from his unit; Houston performed slightly better on the ground with running back Joe Mixon at the forefront, but a significant reduction in passing efficiency raised concerns about the Texans’ playoff prospects at the start of the postseason.
Injuries on the offensive line posed challenges for Houston throughout the year, and the departures of Stefon Diggs and, subsequently, Tank Dell left the receiving corps undermanned as the season came to an end. Although improved health will be a priority for next season, Ryans is clearly aiming for an advancement in offensive production. Aaron Wilson from KPRC2 highlights Jerod Johnson, Bill Lazor, and Ben McDaniels as potential internal replacement candidates to monitor. Saints OC Klint Kubiak, on the other hand, might be an outside candidate.
With Stroud signed for at least three additional seasons (assuming his 2027 fifth-year option is exercised), considerable time remains for the Texans’ offensive nucleus to fulfill its potential. Rapoport mentioned that offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also leaving, indicating that new personnel will be on the sidelines next year as the team aims to become part of the AFC’s top tier.
