The Washington Commanders are just one game short of Super Bowl 59. The Commanders face the Eagles on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game. Washington clinched their spot in the NFC championship game with a surprising victory against the Lions in the Divisional Round. The NFL has recently imposed fines on a Commanders player for some penalties that were overlooked during that game.

Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu escaped a few penalties in last week’s Division Round surprise win against the Lions. Consequently, the NFL has imposed two fines on Luvu.

The initial missed penalty occurred when Luvu executed a helmet-to-helmet tackle on Lions QB Jared Goff. This collision occurred during a play in which Goff threw an interception that was run back for a touchdown. Had a penalty been issued, it would have canceled the touchdown but still provided the Commanders possession deep in Lions territory. Instead, Luvu received a penalty of $16,883 for the hit.

Luvu was additionally penalized $16,883 for a hip-drop tackle against Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs. This foul also did not result in a flag being thrown during the game.

These missed penalties clearly indicate inadequate officiating in Washington’s Divisional Round game. Nonetheless, that does not imply that their win was without legitimacy.

The Commanders are getting ready for their biggest match in three decades.

Washington has not participated in the NFC Championship Game since the 1991 season, when they won against Detroit 41-10 and moved on to the Super Bowl. They secured the Lombardi Trophy with a score of 37-24 against Buffalo.

The Commanders aim to reclaim some of that former greatness on Sunday. Washington faces a Philadelphia team that they are quite familiar with. The Commanders and Eagles divided their regular season series, as each home team emerged victorious in their respective games. The Commanders are returning to Lincoln Financial Field and must secure a victory to reach the Super Bowl.

Fans of the Commanders can anticipate a tightly contested match that will be decided in the final moments. The tiniest margins could determine the outcome of this game, as Philadelphia has a slight edge prior to kickoff.

The Eagles are not only favored to win, but they are also the more well team. The Commanders will miss guard Sam Cosmi, who sustained a knee injury during the game against the Lions.

Washington will need to exhaust every effort to overcome Philadelphia and secure a journey to New Orleans.
