The Lions had a strong season overall, but six players failed to meet expectations.
Despite a quick exit from the playoffs, the 2024 season was a good one for the Detroit Lions. With 15 wins, a division title, and several accomplishments, the Lions’ season would be considered successful by most teams in the league.
Naturally, the list of players who enjoyed individual success is long, as it contributed to their 15-2 record and playoff bye. Some players even exceeded expectations in certain areas.
However, not every Lions player had a standout year. Various factors such as injuries, poor scheme fits, position changes, or increased awareness from opponents can contribute to a player’s underperformance.
Regardless of the reason, these six players didn’t live up to the expected standards this season.
- TE Sam LaPorta
After an incredible rookie season, where LaPorta set multiple franchise and league records for a tight end, it was always going to be tough to match or exceed that level of performance.
He also dealt with injuries, including a hamstring problem in training camp and an ankle issue during the regular season. Later, a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder caused him to miss a game.
In the final six regular-season games, after he appeared to be healthier, LaPorta caught 32 passes (on 45 targets) for 341 yards and four touchdowns.
This late surge accounted for a significant portion of his total season stats: 60 catches, 726 yards, and seven touchdowns.
Although LaPorta’s inclusion on this list is somewhat reluctant, he did experience a “sophomore slump” in terms of production due to injury setbacks and heightened awareness from opponents.
- CB Emmanuel Moseley
Moseley was signed by the Lions in 2023 after recovering from a torn ACL with the San Francisco 49ers the previous year.
After tearing his other ACL just two snaps into his Lions debut in 2023, Moseley was given another opportunity with a one-year deal last offseason.
Expectations were understandably modest given his injury history. However, the hope was that he could stay relatively healthy, and during training camp, he appeared to be playing a significant role.
Unfortunately, a torn pectoral during a joint practice with the New York Giants sent Moseley to IR, delaying his season until Week 12.
Then, a hamstring injury caused him to miss the Thanksgiving Day game, and he was a healthy scratch for two additional games.
Moseley only saw action on special teams in Week 16 and was absent from Week 17.
A subsequent illness forced him to miss Week 18, effectively ending his season. His injury-riddled tenure with the Lions likely came to an end as well.
