The Detroit Lions were unable to reach their first Super Bowl in 2024 following a frustrating playoff elimination by the Washington Commanders. Currently, general manager Brad Holmes aims to prepare for another attempt in 2025.

A key focus for the Lions this offseason is strengthening the pass rush. The Lions possess a strong base with Aidan Hutchinson, yet Marcus Davenport is probably departing, and Za’Darius Smith could be a potential cap casualty.

Even if Smith comes back, he will be 33 this year and has just one year remaining on his present contract. Therefore, in addition to potentially requiring a starter and greater depth for the upcoming season, the Lions also seek a long-term answer across from Hutchinson.

Keeping this in consideration, CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso forecasts that the Lions will select Marshall edge rusher Mike Green as Smith’s eventual successor with their No. 28 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“Overall, Green is a fascinating and highly effective prospect who is expected to be an instant asset to an NFL defense,” Fowler stated in his evaluation of Green. “His skills as a pass rusher provide an initial glimpse of his production potential, but his athletic attributes within an inventive defensive system will enable Green to contribute in multiple ways.”

Selecting Green would fulfill various needs for the Lions.

He can not only provide the essential depth the Lions need for 2025, but he can also be the successor to Smith, whom we believe the Lions will retain unless general manager Brad Holmes can execute a significant move through trade or free agency.

Arriving in Detroit would be perfect for Green, who would gain significantly more time to adjust to the NFL game with a couple of experienced players ahead of him.

Given his draft track record, it’s consistently challenging to forecast what Brad Holmes might choose at any position. However, it’s reasonable to believe he’ll be focusing on edge rushers early in the 2025 NFL Draft.
