Former Detroit Lions quarterback David Blough is rapidly rising as a sought-after coaching talent.

In only one season as a coach in the National Football League, the ex-longtime backup quarterback has attracted significant interest from many teams with younger quarterbacks.

The current assistant quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders is said to have attracted interest from the Jets, Jaguars, and Bears to become part of their coaching teams.

Blough has received high praise for his collaboration with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and for supporting Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury in game preparation and specific play calls.

Chicago is said to be interested in Blough taking on the role of their passing game coordinator, while the Jets currently have an opening for their quarterbacks coach position. Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, former Lions’ coaching staff members, coach the Bears and Jets, respectively.

As per Boilermakers OnSI, “Blough participated at Purdue from 2014-18 with coaches Darrell Hazell (2014-16) and Jeff Brohm (2017-18). He developed into one of the Big Ten’s leading passers during his senior year, throwing for 3,705 yards and 25 touchdowns while completing 66% of his throws.

The 29-year-old agreed to terms as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 2019. The Lions acquired him before the season began in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2022.

When Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel faced injuries, the unseasoned quarterback ended up concluding the 2019 Lions season as the starter for the team.

He most recently signed with Detroit’s practice squad in the 2023 season and started his coaching career in 2024 in Washington.
