The Detroit Lions have seen significant changes to their coaching staff during the 2025 offseason.
They’ve parted ways with their offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, offensive line coach, wide receivers coach, and assistant QB coach.
Despite these departures, the Lions have moved quickly to fill the vacancies, with the most recent hire being the fastest.
In fact, the Lions brought in their newest addition even before it was officially announced that the previous staff member was leaving.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Lions are bringing in David Shaw as their new pass game coordinator.
Shaw spent last season as a senior personnel executive for the Denver Broncos, but he’s most famous for his time at Stanford.
He began at Stanford in 2007 as their offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, later being promoted to head coach in 2011.
Shaw enjoyed a successful 12-season tenure, earning Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors four times and leading the team to three Pac-12 titles and two Rose Bowl victories.
He finished his Stanford career with a 96-54 record.
Shaw is replacing Tanner Engstrand, who held the role for the past two seasons.
Engstrand has been rumored to potentially rejoin Aaron Glenn as the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, though no official move has been made yet.
Shaw is the second coach hired by the Lions from the 2024 Denver Broncos staff, following new offensive coordinator John Morton, who served as the Broncos’ pass game coordinator last season.
