Fijian international Masivesi Dakuwaqa is in trouble after reportedly biting his teammate, Pierre Pagès, in a confrontation that resulted in the scrum-half requiring 20 stitches in his cheek.
Biarritz Olympique issued a statement on Friday evening announcing that two senior players were involved in a serious incident and that an internal investigation would be conducted.
At first, the club didn’t reveal the names of the players or the details of the incident. Nonetheless, the French source RugbyRama subsequently reported that Dakuwaqa was arrested by the police after aggressively assaulting Pagès after a night out.
Dakuwaqa moved to Biarritz following three years with Montpellier and was performing well until last January. The No.8 had earlier played for Toulon and Western Force, and earned three caps for Fiji during the November 2021 tour.
The Fijian forward has provided no explanation for attacking his teammate, but he reportedly confessed to biting Pagès, stating that he does not remember the occurrences of that night. A source, who did not wish to be named, claims the altercation arose from a financial disagreement and that Pagès got hurt while attempting to separate Dakuwaqa and another player. Pagès was transported to the hospital, whereas Dakuwaqa was apprehended immediately.
The loose forward has been banned from the club and is set to attend court in May 2025. Journalist Tanguy Scigala from France states that Biarritz might have valid reasons to let the player go without any compensation.
Dakuwaqa (6’3, 122kg) inked a two-year deal with Biarritz in July 2024 and garnered attention from multiple Pro D2 teams, who were impressed by his strong performances. In the meantime, Biarritz – following a solid beginning to the season – has not managed to achieve a victory since early December and currently stands 10th in the Pro D2.
Biarritz’s announcement regarding the situation stated: “Biarritz Olympique acknowledges that a significant incident took place outside its premises and beyond any organized framework by the club, involving one of its players. The event took place as a second player attempted to deescalate the situation, only to be violently assaulted and hurt, needing medical care.
“The club treats this event with great seriousness and has promptly implemented the essential actions: An internal investigation is currently in progress to accurately determine the facts; complete cooperation with the relevant authorities is guaranteed; and suitable sanctions will be applied based on the investigation’s outcomes.”
“Biarritz Olympique emphasizes its dedication to the principles of respect and exemplary behavior, both in play and beyond.” In consideration of those involved and to ensure the procedure proceeds smoothly, we will refrain from making additional comments at this point.”
