Detroit Lions supporters eager for general manager Brad Holmes to make a significant acquisition to strengthen the edge rusher lineup this offseason will be pleased to hear that at least one star player might be up for trade.
That superstar is none other than Myles Garrett, the Cleveland Browns edge rusher, who openly requested a trade from the dysfunctional organization to pursue a Super Bowl victory.
Garrett kept his future with the Browns uncertain after the conclusion of the 2024 season, so this isn’t a complete surprise. However, it will be fascinating to observe how events develop, given that the Browns allegedly have no desire to trade him, despite his public demand.
“In response to Myles Garrett’s public trade request, the Browns are emphasizing today that they do not intend to trade Garrett and have no interest in considering offers,” wrote FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz.
Myles Garrett request for a trade
“As a child aspiring to play in the NFL, my sole focus was on the ultimate aspiration of winning a Super Bowl — and that aspiration motivates me now more than ever,” Garrett expressed in his statement. “My affection for the Northeast Ohio community and the amazing fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has turned this into one of the hardest choices I’ve ever faced.” The last eight years have transformed me into the person I am now.
“Although I’ve cherished living in this city, my ambition to succeed and compete at the highest levels prevents me from being satisfied.” The objective was never to travel from Cleveland to Canton; it has always been to compete and secure a Super Bowl victory.
“With that in mind, I have asked to be traded from the Cleveland Browns,” Garrett finished.
Lions identified as potential destination for Myles Garrett.
Following the monumental trade request, Bryan Murphy of The Sporting News proposed the Detroit Lions as a potential destination for Garrett.
“Of course, the team is prepared for the future with a fierce striker in Hutchinson, yet as the Lions discovered last year, there is no such thing as having too much talent,” Murphy wrote. “Combining Garrett and Hutchinson would instantly provide the Lions with the most formidable pass rushing tandem in the league.”
Garrett has an additional two years remaining on his substantial $125 million contract, meaning there’s no chance of him being a temporary acquisition. Moreover, the Lions have sufficient cap space to accommodate Garrett’s contract and potentially extend it beyond 2026.
