More Trades the Lakers Could Make to Build Around Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers made a surprising trade over the weekend, acquiring Luka Doncic in exchange for Anthony Davis. While NBA fans are still processing this bold move, the Lakers’ front office cannot afford to delay further transactions. With the February 6 trade deadline approaching, the Lakers urgently need to finalize their roster.

Following Davis’ departure, the Lakers face a significant gap in the frontcourt. They need to acquire at least one reliable center and surround Doncic and LeBron James with suitable players. The following three moves would help accomplish this goal.

The Lakers still have their 2031 first-round pick available for trade after preserving it in the Luka Doncic deal. This pick is the most valuable asset Rob Pelinka holds as the trade deadline approaches. An unprotected first-round pick could significantly benefit the Lakers in trade talks.

One player the Lakers should target in these discussions is Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz.

The 23-year-old center is an ideal fit for the Lakers under Doncic and LeBron James, and he also matches the team’s current timeline. He is an excellent lob threat and rim protector on offense, while also being capable of anchoring the defense.

The Lakers can acquire Kessler using their first-round pick. As Kessler is on a cost-effective rookie deal, the Lakers won’t need to trade significant salary. Any of their minimum contracts, like Christian Wood’s, should be enough to completethe trade.
