The Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) is shocked by the recent statements from newly appointed Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) Director, Laijipa Naulivou, clearly dismissing PIDSOGISEC (Pacific Islanders of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and sex characteristics) inclusion in women’s rugby. Such comments are not only biased and exclusionary but also diminish the essential principles of respect, equality, and inclusion that sports ought to promote.

Primarily, the constitution in section 26(3) (a) declares that no individual shall face unfair discrimination due to their sex, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression. Director Naulivou should be informed about this, as we all recognize the biases encountered by women in rugby. We were surprised to hear such regressive and detrimental comments from her.

“Sexual orientation should never be a barrier to participation, leadership, or success in any sporting field—including rugby. The notion that being gay is a “problem” in women’s rugby is deeply troubling and perpetuates harmful stereotypes that have no place in modern sports or society,” FWRM Executive Director Nalini Singh said

“Instead of concentrating on the players’ sexuality, you should focus on your responsibilities by securing proper funding and ensuring the welfare of the women rugby players, so they don’t have to sleep on airport benches or trek long distances to their training,” stated Ms. Singh.

FWRM urges the FRU to adopt a strong position against this type of exclusionary language by implementing policies that safeguard women, promoting a culture of respect, and guaranteeing that leadership roles are occupied by those who advocate for inclusivity. Silence equates to complicity, and leadership must embody the principles of inclusion rather than exclusion.

We stand united with all women in sports, including those belonging to the PIDSOGISEC community. No individual should have to decide between their identity and their love for the sport.

Rugby and all sports should be an inclusive environment for all. FWRM continues to be dedicated to promoting a more inclusive and fair society—both on and off the field.
