LeBron James has expressed his excitement about teaming up with Luka Doncic at the Los Angeles Lakers after the surprising trade that has left the basketball world stunned.
Doncic was officially introduced by the Lakers on Tuesday following a shocking trade with the Dallas Mavericks, which saw Anthony Davis go the other way.
James, who was only notified about the trade late Saturday, acknowledged on Tuesday that he was still processing the news. This was his first public statement since the deal went through.
“It’s been a whirlwind,” James remarked after leading the Lakers to a dominant 122-97 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
“It’s been tough, especially for me. I spent six years with AD, we won a championship together, and he’s one of my closest friends,” James continued. “But it’s a business, and we understand that. Basketball is a business.”
Despite the mixed emotions, James expressed his enthusiasm about the possibility of forming a dynamic duo with Doncic, who was present on the sidelines as the Lakers secured their victory.
“It’s going to be special,” James said. “We’re going to draw a lot of attention. Our ability to score, rebound, and pass will make it easier for our teammates, and that’s what we want to do.”
“We aim to create opportunities where teammates just have to catch and finish—whether that’s a dunk or a shot. It’s our job to lead them every game,” James added. “Luka is a star—only 25 and hasn’t reached his peak yet. He’s already accomplished amazing things in this league. I’m thrilled to have him, and LA is excited as well. It still feels a bit surreal.”
Lakers’ general manager Rob Pelinka mentioned earlier on Tuesday that Doncic, who has been sidelined since December 25 due to a calf injury, could make his debut soon.
Reports suggest Doncic might be ready to play against the Indiana Pacers this Saturday.
