It looks like the Detroit Lions will have a variety of options to consider as they work on building their roster during the offseason.
The team has already been mentioned as a potential trade destination for high-profile players like Myles Garrett, Cooper Kupp Dan Campbell Brings UFL Offensive Coordinator to Join Lions
These names are just the tip of the iceberg, with many big free agent signings also on the table.
In free agency, it appears the Lions could be in the mix for a linebacker who has already played in two Super Bowls during his first six seasons in the NFL.
In an article analyzing the top potential landing spots for the best linebackers in this year’s free-agent class, Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron listed the Lions as a prime destination for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw.
When healthy, Greenlaw has been a standout player in his six years with the 49ers.
He posted 92 tackles as a rookie and followed it up with 86 tackles in 13 games the following season. His third year was cut short by injury, but he bounced back strong in year four.
Greenlaw recorded 127 tackles and forced two fumbles during his fourth season, which earned him a two-year, $16.4 million contract.
His first year on that deal was another solid season, with 120 tackles and five for a loss.
Unfortunately, the season ended with a torn Achilles in the Super Bowl.
He spent most of the 2024 season recovering from that injury, leaving some teams uncertain about what they can expect from him moving forward.
This uncertainty could present an opportunity to sign him at a lower price for teams willing to take a chance on him regaining his former form, and the Lions could be one of those teams willing to roll the dice.
The Lions could be looking for a new linebacker this offseason. Derrick Barnes is set to hit free agency, and rumors suggest that defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is interested in bringing him back.
If Barnes departs, Greenlaw could serve as a solid replacement for the Lions’ linebacker group, which struggled with injuries last season and needs help against the run.
