Lions considered top contender to sign free agent linebacker who could prove to be a steal.

The Detroit Lions are seeking cost-effective improvements for their defense in free agency, and Pro Football Focus has highlighted a potentially excellent addition for their linebacker corps.

The Detroit Lions need to address a defense that faltered late in the season, and adding depth across all positions will be key this offseason. While some areas may appear solid on paper, the team should remain open to any potential upgrades.

Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus assessed potential landing spots for top free agent linebackers, naming the Lions as a possibility for Dre Greenlaw of the San Francisco 49ers.

Greenlaw appeared in only two games this season as he recovered from an Achilles injury, and a calf injury forced him to IR at the season’s end. This could make him a questionable free-agent target, but if his medical checks out, the Lions might find great value.

Under Brad Holmes, the Lions have been cautious spenders in free agency. This approach has proven wise, as they’ve avoided bad long-term contracts that could restrict their financial flexibility. Their fiscal restraint now might allow them to make a more significant move.

Many of Detroit’s signings have included players coming off injury or looking to prove themselves. Players like Charles Harris, Kalif Raymond, Alex Anzalone, and David Montgomery have been solid additions for Holmes. Greenlaw could fit into this category.

Few might remember that Greenlaw was named PFWA All-Rookie in 2019. Over his career, he has been a consistent tackler with 455 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions, and 14 passes defended. If healthy, he could fill some gaps behind Detroit’s defensive line.
