NFL Insider Makes Bold Prediction About Patriots’ Offseason
A crucial period lies ahead for the Patriots.
Mike Vrabel appears to be the perfect candidate to lead New England through a rebuild after a string of disappointing seasons. However, Vrabel’s success will depend on the talent available to him, and the Patriots need significant improvement in that area this offseason.
With ample salary cap space and a key attraction in Drake Maye, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero predicts that New England will be highly active once the new league year starts.
“I expect them to be very engaged,” Pelissero said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz,” as quoted by USA Today. “…It’s tough when you’re struggling, and no one was sure about the quarterback’s future. The positive this year is, even though they’re still struggling, people now know the quarterback is solid. Will the Patriots need to overpay in free agency? Likely, but that’s how it works.
“But now, you have a much stronger pitch than just offering extra money. You’re also offering the chance to play with a quarterback who, with the right support, has the potential to be really good.”
Who might benefit from these anticipated overpays? Wide receiver Tee Higgins and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley are among the top talents expected to hit the market, both of whom play positions the Patriots need to address.
While New England will face competition to sign these stars or other top free agents, Pelissero emphasized that the team now has a much more appealing offer than in previous years.
