Former BYU Basketball Player Jake Shoff Dies in Car Crash

PROVO, Utah – Former BYU basketball player Jake Shoff tragically lost his life on February 6, 2025.

Shoff, who played for BYU from 2001 to 2004 after transferring from Weber State, died in a car accident on Thursday. He was 46 years old.

 

Jake Shoff Passes Away at 46

BYU basketball’s social media shared, “Cougar Nation mourns the loss of basketball alumni, Jake Shoff. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Ben Criddle, Shoff’s brother-in-law and former BYU football cornerback, posted on X:

“On behalf of the Shoff and Criddle families, we announce the heartbreaking loss of an incredible man—a giant in every way. Our world has been turned upside down. We are in shock and deeply saddened. No words can fill the void we feel right now.”

Shoff was a key player on two BYU basketball teams that made the NCAA Tournament under former head coach Steve Cleveland.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he completed a two-year mission in Honduras.

Shoff served as the CEO of The Phoenix Recovery Center and described the treatment industry as his “life’s professional passion.”

He is survived by his wife, Emily, and their four sons.

The Shoff and Criddle families shared on social media, “We know Jake would want us all to ‘Rise and Shout’ in this life! Seize the moment! Make a difference in the lives around you! Love your friends and family! Let’s all strive to be more like Jake today and always.”
