Mavericks Fan Takes Drastic Action to Protest Luka Dončić’s Trade to Lakers
Luka Dončić’s unexpected trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los
Angeles Lakers last weekend left many Mavericks supporters shocked, including 20-year-old Jacob Posner.
Although Posner is from Los Angeles, he became a Mavericks fan because of Dončić. “When Luka entered the league and joined the Mavs, I instantly knew he was my guy and I wanted to support the Mavs,” Posner shared with CBS News. “His basketball IQ stands out—how he controls the game and reads it.” Needless to say, the surprise trade left him devastated.
Now, Posner is taking action. The college student has launched a fundraiser to put up billboards around the Mavericks’ home stadium to protest the trade and voice his frustration with team general manager Nico Harrison and owner Miriam Adelson for trading away the Slovenian star.
“Our goal is to cover the area around the American Airlines Center (AAC) with protest billboards, making it clear to the front office that Dallas deserves better team decisions,” Posner stated on his GoFundMe page. He also included a map of the billboards’ locations and a breakdown of the costs for each one. The total cost of the campaign is around $82,600, and they have already raised more than half of this amount.
“Trading Luka Magic has left a massive hole in the hearts of Dallas fans. By coming together for this billboard initiative, we’re sending a strong, undeniable message to the Mavs: We won’t be ignored, and we deserve better choices,” Posner added.
Posner is open to billboard design suggestions, but fans in Dallas can expect at least one billboard criticizing the controversial trade. “Whatever funds we raise will go directly toward the billboards, whether we fall short, meet the goal, or exceed it. These billboards will happen,” he declared.
Dončić is set to make his debut with the Lakers against the Indiana Pacers on February 8.
