The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has initiated a nationwide effort to examine a criminal organization that is targeting the homes of professional athletes across the United States.
In a statement, the FBI indicated that the break-ins have been organized by individuals from South American Theft Groups (SATGs).
Last year, the NFL warned players about security after the residences of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into, along with a property of Linval Joseph from the Dallas Cowboys.
SATG suspects reportedly tracked the travel plans of athletes to determine when their residences would be vacant.
The FBI announced the arrest of two individuals alleged to be operating an East Coast scheme for reselling stolen merchandise.
A federal grand jury in Cincinnati, Ohio has also charged three individuals – who reportedly carried out a burglary at the residence of an NFL player last year – and are suspected of being part of the group.
The Chiefs are looking to secure a third straight Super Bowl victory when they face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in New Orleans.
