Jake Shoff, Former BYU Basketball Player, Dies in Car Accident

Jake Shoff, a former BYU basketball player, tragically passed away on February 6, 2025.

Shoff, who played for BYU from 2001 to 2004 after transferring from Weber State, lost his life in a car accident on Thursday. He was 46 years old.

Jake Shoff passed away at 46

The BYU basketball social media accounts posted, “Cougar Nation mourns the loss of basketball alum, Jake Shoff. Our hearts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Ben Criddle, Jake Shoff’s brother-in-law and former BYU football cornerback, shared on X:

“On behalf of the Shoff and Criddle families, we mourn the loss of a giant of a man—a giant in every way. Our world has been turned upside down. We are devastated and in shock. Words cannot express the emptiness we are all feeling.”

Shoff was part of two BYU basketball teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament under head coach Steve Cleveland.

A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shoff served a two-year mission in Honduras.

Shoff was the CEO of The Phoenix Recovery Center and described the treatment industry as his “life’s professional passion.”

Shoff is survived by his wife, Emily, and their four sons.

The Shoff and Criddle families posted on social media, “We want to remind everyone that Jake would want us all to ‘Rise and Shout’ in this life! Seize every moment! Make a difference in the lives of those around you! Love your friends and family! Let’s all strive to be more like Jake today and always.”
