Former Lions Coach Delivers Bad News to Aaron Rodgers
Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has reportedly shared disappointing news with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The NFL offseason is a time for teams to make key roster improvements, and the New York Jets have significant changes ahead. Glenn, who previously served as the Lions’ defensive coordinator, is now the Jets’ head coach and is focused on steering them toward a better season after their disappointing 5-12 finish in 2024.
Now, reports indicate that Glenn and Jets general manager Darren Mougey have decided to part ways with Rodgers.
Reports Suggest Ex-Lions DC Aaron Glenn and Jets Are Moving On from Rodgers
On Sunday, February 9, Jay Glazer of Fox NFL Sunday shared on X that Rodgers and the Jets are going their separate ways.
According to Glazer, Rodgers “flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future, only to be informed that the team was moving on from him.”
Glazer also stated that “if this results in a post-June 1 designation, Rodgers would be eligible to sign with any team in the league by March 12, should he choose to continue playing.”
He further noted that Rodgers does not appear ready to retire, explaining, “Since Aaron made the effort to travel back and discuss his future, all indications suggest he still wants to play. It just won’t be with the Jets.”
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport also confirmed the reports, saying that both parties are headed “in different directions, ultimately leading to a separation.”
In January, Glenn spoke to the media about Rodgers’ situation, stating, “Here’s what I do know: Aaron Rodgers will be a topic of discussion. We have already exchanged texts, and as we continue evaluating the roster, we’ll make decisions accordingly—just as we will for other players on the team.”
While the news is unexpected, it isn’t entirely shocking. In a February 9 article for the NFL, analyst Nick Shook noted that “Rodgers’ future has been uncertain for months,” adding that the quarterback has “frequently discussed various possibilities, including his desire to stay with the Jets if they were willing.”
Assessing Aaron Rodgers’ Future
it remains to be seen which teams might pursue Rodgers. Several franchises could benefit from an experienced quarterback, though securing a deal for him may not be straightforward.
“A few teams need quarterback help,” Shook pointed out, but suggested that at this stage in his career, Rodgers is “essentially an experienced bridge quarterback.”
Regarding his contract, Over the Cap reports that if the Jets move on before June 1, whether via trade or release, they would absorb $49 million in dead cap. However, designating a post-June 1 move would free up $9.5 million in cap space for New York.
