The Detroit Lions boast one of the NFL’s most talented rosters, but they remain a team to watch closely this offseason. With a strong salary cap situation, the Lions still have clear areas that need improvement. They will likely focus on positions such as edge rusher, cornerback, and possibly offensive line during free agency to fill these gaps. However, even a successful free-agent period might not fully address these needs, making the draft a potential area for further additions. In Athlon Sports’ latest mock draft, Luke Easterling projects the Lions to select Texas A&M edge rusher Nic Scourton with the 28th pick. Scourton earned All-SEC First Team honors in 2024, though his season was less productive compared to his previous year at Purdue, where he led the Big Ten with 10 sacks. Despite only registering five sacks at A&M, Scourton’s potential and athleticism are what have kept him highly regarded. He also has room for growth, as he won’t turn 21 until August. In the second round, the Lions were predicted to add Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos, who also earned All-SEC honors. Amos had impressive numbers, allowing just 51.6% of passes to be completed when thrown his way, while also intercepting more passes than he allowed touchdowns. Amos appears to be a more reliable pick, balancing out the risk associated with Scourton in the first round. If the Lions are able to secure an edge rusher in free agency, Scourton could represent an intriguing high-upside choice in round one, with Amos rounding out the defensive roster.
