On Thursday, it was revealed that the Detroit Lions were bringing in another coach. This time, they’re hiring Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice to fill that exact position with Detroit.
This is significant evidence of two things. The first point is that the Lions’ offense intends to maintain its philosophy, as head coach Dan Campbell mentioned at the season’s conclusion.
“No, I don’t perceive philosophy evolving.” No, I believe we’re – who we are is who we are, and we’ve remained that way since I arrived. Does that imply that a few details are adjusted? Some adjustments will be made, which is typical with new coordinators, as you want their personal touch and style incorporated. However, my goal is to maintain what we aim to achieve, what (Lions QB Jared) Goff represents, how our runners contribute, our identity on defense, and our overall playing style.
The Lions will be a team that focuses on establishing the run to influence their passing game on offense. Shifting Scottie Montgomery to the role of receivers coach isn’t likely to bring significant changes. A strong dependence on blocking from the receiving room will continue to be significant.
The next point is that this clearly indicates the Lions will be accelerating their efforts with Jahmyr Gibbs in the future. A separation with David Montgomery has occurred, and in several respects, that will persist; however, this is now Gibbs’ backfield. Employing a person he trusts clearly demonstrates that.
Gibbs was the running back coach at Georgia Tech, and according to him, Choice was the main reason he chose to go there despite receiving 28 offers from other schools.
Gibbs and Choice developed a strong connection throughout the recruitment process. It was Choice that made Gibbs and his adoptive parents recognize that he was exceptional and that he had first-round talent. Since then, Choice has served as a mentor to Gibbs.
Following a few disappointing seasons at Georgia Tech, Gibbs made the choice to transfer to Alabama. Choice backed the decision and trailed him closely. He departed for the position of running backs coach at Texas not long after.
The connection has persisted since then. The second call Gibbs received on draft night was for the choice. Immediately after speaking with the Lions, he was on the line with Choice, who, resembling a proud parent, shed joyful tears.
Bringing these two back together is significant as it illustrates the trust the team places in Gibbs, and it will enhance Gibbs’s existing confidence, knowing that one of his earliest supporters is present with him at the next highest level.
Gibbs wasn’t the sole running back Choice reached the first round with, either. In that same draft, he selected Bijan Robinson just a few picks before. Choice also includes Jaydon Blue entering this year’s draft. While he may not be chosen in the first round, he will definitely get selected.
