A report suggests that the Los Angeles Rams are growing frustrated with Matthew Stafford and his wife Kelly for a variety of reasons.
There has been a lot of speculation about whether former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford will return to the Los Angeles Rams next season. Stafford has expressed his desire to continue playing in the NFL in 2025, but it doesn’t guarantee a deal with the Rams.
NFL expert and sports commentator Colin Cowherd shared some insider information about the Rams’ stance on Stafford’s contract extension during his show on February 13. Cowherd discussed Stafford’s future and the quarterback situation in the NFL, revealing that he had made some calls and sent texts to propose a few potential moves.
His main suggestion was that Stafford could move to the New York Giants, while Aaron Rodgers could go to the Rams. However, the most revealing part of Cowherd’s comments was about Stafford’s return to the Rams.
He mentioned that the Los Angeles front office was growing weary of the ongoing discussions surrounding Stafford and his wife Kelly. This includes her public criticisms of the Rams’ management, particularly regarding the departure of Cooper Kupp.
Cowherd said, “The Rams like Matt Stafford, but they’re tiring of the constant quarterback talk and his wife speaking out publicly.” He added, “They’re not thrilled about Cooper Kupp going public with something they wanted to keep quiet.”
He further stated, “They’re getting a bit tired of both Cooper Kupp and, to a lesser extent, Matt Stafford. They like him, but they don’t want to restructure his deal or offer him a new contract.”
As for the possibility of Stafford moving to the Giants, Cowherd mentioned that the Giants’ management, led by head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, would need to make a move to stay employed beyond Thanksgiving. He believes the Giants will target Stafford.
Regarding Kelly Stafford’s comments, during the February 6 episode of her podcast “The Morning After,” she discussed Cooper Kupp being informed that the Rams were planning to trade him. “I wasn’t planning on discussing this, but why not,” she said. “My husband just wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad spot. If you’re catching my drift, you’re catching my drift.”
She further fueled rumors of Stafford potentially being traded, stating that while she loves “the city of L.A.,” she also enjoys “an adventure.”
At the end of last season, Stafford signed a short-term raise for 2024 with the Rams, but no firm contract was agreed upon after that. Stafford’s cap hit for 2025 is $49.6 million, and the Rams could save $27 million by trading him after June 1 or $23 million before June 1.
