As 2025 NFL free agency approaches, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett remains one of the most sought-after trade targets after requesting a move in early February. Although Aidan Hutchinson knows that the Detroit Lions are unlikely to land Garrett, that hasn’t stopped him from imagining the possibilities of a pass-rushing duo between the two.
During a conversation about the potential trade on ‘The Squeeze’ podcast, hosted by actor Taylor Lautner and his wife, Taylor ‘Tay’ Lautner, Hutchinson called the idea of them pairing up “deadly.” He acknowledged that Garrett’s addition would “elevate” Detroit’s entire defensive line and improve the performance of both edge rushers. “If me and Myles were to pair up, that would be deadly,” Hutchinson said. “We were at the [NFL Honors show] and we were just talking about what could be. Although it’s probably unlikely, I would be thrilled to play next to him if it were to happen. Our whole defensive line would be totally elevated — that would be a scary defensive line. We get along, too.”
Hutchinson’s 2024 season was cut short after five games due to a brutal broken leg. However, before the injury, he was leading the league with 7.5 sacks through Week 5. In just three seasons, Hutchinson had already established himself as one of the league’s premier pass-rushers and was on track for his first All-Pro recognition before his injury.
Garrett, one of the most dominant defensive ends of the last decade, had another stellar season in 2024, recording his second consecutive 14-sack season with the Browns. This performance marked his seventh straight season with double-digit sacks and earned him his fourth first-team All-Pro selection.
Lions’ 2025 defensive outlook with Aidan Hutchinson’s impending return
Once Hutchinson recovers from his severe injury, he will lead a revamped Lions defense in 2025. Over the offseason, Detroit lost their standout defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who became the head coach of the New York Jets. Kelvin Sheppard, the former linebackers coach, will take over as the defensive coordinator in 2025.
As Sheppard aims to continue Glenn’s tough-minded approach, many of the Lions’ defensive players will hit free agency in March. Notably, top cornerback Carlton Davis III’s $14.5 million contract will expire, forcing the front office to negotiate a new deal with him. Marcus Davenport, Ifeatu Melifonwu, Kindle Vildor, Emmanuel Moseley, and Levi Onwuzurike will also become unrestricted free agents.
Given their current salary cap situation, the Lions were previously considered a strong contender to acquire Garrett. However, the Browns have typically been reluctant to trade their star players to competing teams. Despite the changes within Detroit’s organization, the Lions have still dominated the NFC over the past two years.
