The NFL has concluded its investigation into Detroit Lions’ Jameson Williams regarding an incident involving an unlicensed gun. No disciplinary action will be taken.
An NFL spokesperson confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday that the case against Williams has been closed and no further disciplinary measures will be pursued.
“I really admire that kid because he’s gone through a lot,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell told the Free Press. “And look, some of it is on him, and he knows that, which is what I respect — it took him some time to fully embrace what we’re doing. He can be stubborn, but that’s also part of why you like him, why I like him.”
Lions’ wide receiver Jameson Williams clears gun case
Williams faced legal troubles on October 8 when he and his brother were pulled over shortly after midnight in the Detroit area. Officers discovered two handguns in the vehicle, both legally registered, but Williams didn’t have a concealed pistol license, which could have led to charges for carrying a concealed weapon.
However, Williams wasn’t arrested or formally charged. A police sergeant, who was a Lions fan, briefly handcuffed Williams but eventually let him go after consulting with a lieutenant. The sergeant recognized Williams and chose to release him after a phone conversation with the lieutenant.
In his third season with the NFL, Williams is having his best year yet. With 58 receptions, he posted career highs, totaling 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns. The Lions selected him 12th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Alabama, though he is still gaining valuable experience in the league.
“He’s learned a lot and grown from it all, honestly… and things just keep getting better. Each experience has been a lesson, and he’s learning from it. I really like where he is now. I’m proud of him,” Campbell said.
