Could a Former Pro Bowler Find His Way Back to Detroit?

The Detroit Lions are known for having one of the top offensive lines in the NFL, but there are some uncertainties surrounding the guard positions for next season. Kevin Zeitler is set to become a free agent and is drawing interest from multiple teams. Christian Mahogany showed promise during his two starts as a rookie, and he could potentially take over a starting role. Graham Glasgow moved to left guard to make room for Zeitler, but had a difficult 2024 season.

Several scenarios are possible. Zeitler may return, or he could leave (obviously). Glasgow might become a cap casualty, and at the very least, he should face competition for a starting spot (which could be either guard position, depending on Zeitler’s situation). Mahogany could emerge as the frontrunner for a starting position, or the team may decide he needs more development before being handed a role. If things unfold a certain way, a reunion with a former Pro Bowler could become a possibility.

Lions could consider bringing back former Pro Bowler if things align that way

As the guard free agent market exploded last offseason, it became clear that Jonah Jackson would not be returning to the Lions. He cashed in on that surge, signing a three-year, $51 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams.

However, Jackson’s first season with the Rams did not go well. A shoulder injury in training camp didn’t stop him from playing in the season opener against the Lions (starting at center, by the way), but he fractured his scapula in Week 2 and missed time until Week 10. He returned to center, but was benched the following week in favor of rookie Beaux Limmer. Jackson didn’t play again until the Rams’ meaningless season finale, where he started at right guard. Given these issues, Matt Okuda from NFL.com recently included Jackson on his list of potential cut candidates for NFC teams.

Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports has suggested that the Lions could bring Jackson back if the situation plays out right. “The most likely outcome is that the Lions bring back Zeitler, and Mahogany may get a starting spot, but if the team parts ways with Glasgow and wants to give Mahogany a bit more time, re-signing Jonah Jackson could be the best move for Detroit.”

Jackson made a Pro Bowl appearance as the Lions’ left guard in 2021, but injuries became a factor over the following two seasons. His performance dipped last season, and by the end of the year, he was no longer a significant contributor. If Jackson is cut by the Rams, a lot would have to fall into place for a reunion with the Lions to become realistic. For now, this remains a “never say never” situation.
