Ben Johnson played a crucial role in aiding the Detroit Lions’ ascent to prominence. However, following the NFL Scouting Combine, he might have solidified his position as their foremost competitor.

Last month, Johnson was appointed as the head coach of the Chicago Bears following three years as the offensive coordinator for Detroit. During his press conference in Indianapolis, he turned into a walking sound bite when some interpreted his remarks about Caleb Williams as an insult to Jared Goff.

However, equally evident as Johnson’s remarks regarding Williams was his observation of the defense’s difficulty in containing him. Although it might not have been deliberate, some Lions defenders have expressed their sentiments as they get ready to encounter Johnson this season.

Kerby Joseph, Amik Robertson Respond to Ben Johnson’s Remarks Criticizing Lions’ Defense

Johnson was questioned about what thrills him the most while developing the Bears offense. He began analyzing the distinctions between Williams and Goff. While Johnson highlighted Williams’s talent for extending plays as a significant distinction, he also expressed frustration at seeing his defense struggle to contain quarterbacks possessing his new quarterback’s abilities.

“I feel thrilled when I contemplate that since I haven’t truly experienced it during my time in the league,” Johnson mentioned. “However, I have been in the opposite position and have felt it.” “It’s dispiriting when you’re on the opposing side and you see that occurring to your defense.”

The remarks appeared to be a straightforward reply but attracted the interest of Kerby Joseph and Amik Robertson. Joseph went on his X account to share an image of Peter Griffin hiding in the shadows in response to Johnson’s remarks. Robertson responded by quoting the post and adding the caption “Yah feel me…”

The remarks might have touched a nerve with Joseph and Robertson, yet they were not without justification.

Last season, the Lions finished fourth in rushing yards with 454 and were tied for third by allowing six rushing touchdowns to quarterbacks. The top performances were when Josh Allen amassed 430 total yards and four touchdowns – with two being rushing – during a 48-42 defeat in Week 15, while Jayden Daniels recorded 350 total yards and two passing touchdowns in the 45-31 defeat against the Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Although both of those games were significant defeats in the Lions’ season, Williams’s displays against Detroit might be what highlights the situation. Although the Lions secured victories in both matches, Williams performed admirably, passing for 590 yards, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions while rushing 10 times for 73 yards.

It’s a skill set that not only Johnson might be eager to employ, but one that consistently tore apart the Lions defense last season. With Johnson heading to Chicago, Joseph and Robertson might be more driven to contain dynamic quarterbacks like Williams and provide Lions fans the ultimate satisfaction when they face off next season.
