Did the Eagles Make a Mistake Hiring Scot Loeffler?

What Did the Eagles Get Wrong With Scot Loeffler’s Hire?

Not everyone has been thrilled with Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni’s recent coaching decisions.

Despite holding the highest active winning percentage among current NFL coaches, Sirianni chose to promote Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator and primary play-caller this season. Now, he has found his new quarterbacks coach.

Philadelphia has reached an agreement with former Bowling Green head coach Scot Loeffler to serve as the team’s quarterbacks coach, working directly with Super Bowl LIX quarterback Jalen Hurts as he aims to elevate his game.

While some appreciate the unconventional approach, Sirianni has emphasized that his focus was solely on hiring the best candidate for the role.

“I’m always looking for a good person because I think we just saw there were many different reasons why we were able to win, but a big one was teamwork, connection, selflessness. So you’re always looking for that,” Sirianni said. “And a job of a position coach is to help a player get better fundamentally.

“So that’s the main thing you’re looking for in a position coach, but also, can they bring new thoughts, new schemes, new ideas to the table to help the development of your offense and to continue the forward thinking and evolution of your offense?”

The issue with Loeffler isn’t his past connection to Tom Brady. Instead, it’s his lack of recent experience coaching at a high level in the NFL.

For a team chasing another Super Bowl, the Eagles would have been better served by hiring a seasoned offensive strategist with play-calling experience. Loeffler remains an unknown quantity, but with the excitement of a recent championship still lingering, fans have high expectations.

That’s why the Eagles must start next season strong—Hurts’ chemistry with his play-caller will be crucial to their success.
