The Detroit Lions finished at the peak of the NFC last season, and despite several coaching changes occurring in the offseason, they are well-positioned to contend for a spot in the big game next season. There is plenty of incomplete work ahead, and with the foundation of the Lions’ roster remaining, they possess the resources to bring back the success next season.
Nonetheless, the Lions might enter the 2025 season missing a veteran NFL player who is contemplating retirement and a shift in career.
Retirement: A Choice for NFL Veteran
In terms of ideal wide receivers, the Lions boast two in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. They contributed to the Lions’ string of victories last season, achieving a regular season record of 15-2.
However, there’s another wide receiver who was part of the active roster for the 2024 season, and that would be Allen Robinson. As reported by Dave Birkett from The Detroit Free Press, Robinson is contemplating retirement this offseason.
Robinson, 31, joined the Detroit Lions’ practice squad last August and was promoted to the active roster in September. He didn’t receive much playing time, and now he’s considering retirement while taking his family into account.
“For me, it’s currently a matter of assessing what the upcoming year holds for me overall,” Robinson shared with the Free Press. “That’s roughly my current stance on it.” “I’m spending some time to make this choice with my family.”
Robinson commenced his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2015 and received numerous other accolades during his career. Throughout the year, he has played for the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and the Lions. Robinson was likewise from Detroit and finished his studies at St. Mary’s Preparatory in Orchard Lake Village.
Family Factoring Into Detroit Lions Player’s Retirement Decision
“To me, it’s primarily about understanding what my future entails in this game and within this league,” Robinson stated. “Playing, completing Season 11, spending time with family, exploring various activities together, relocating and things like that.”
He stated, “Thus, for me, it’s now a matter of taking time to assess what next year looks like for me overall. That’s pretty much my current stance on it. “I’m spending some time to come to this decision with my family.”
Robinson will be an unrestricted free agent when the 2025 league year starts on March 12. Cornerback Carlton Davis, who is another player poised to enter free agency in the offseason, started 13 games for the Detroit Lions in the 2024 season but suffered a season-ending jaw injury in the Lions’ Week 15 defeat against the Buffalo Bills.
As reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars are anticipated to be among the teams keen on acquiring the cornerback. Fowler mentioned in a feature on Sunday, March 2, that “the Jaguars will assess the market for veteran corner Carlton Davis III, who is also on his third contract.”
