BYU Parts Ways with Amber Whiting After Three Seasons
BYU women’s basketball is now in search of a new head coach.
The university revealed on Saturday morning that Whiting and BYU have mutually decided to “part ways.”
On3’s Talia Goodman initially broke the news on Friday evening, using the same “part ways” phrasing as BYU’s official statement.
Whiting coached at BYU for three years, compiling a 45-51 overall record. During her tenure, the Cougars experienced three losing seasons.
She oversaw BYU’s transition from the West Coast Conference to the Big 12.
Before taking the BYU job in 2022, Whiting had been the head coach at Burley High School in Idaho.
Her BYU team appeared to have a major win on February 15 when they triumphed over No. 20 Oklahoma State. However, the Cougars followed that up with five straight losses.
Two of those defeats came in overtime, and the final loss occurred in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament to UCF earlier this week.
The team ended the season with a 13-17 record.
This past season, BYU featured a youthful squad with five freshmen, as well as sophomore Amari Whiting, Amber Whiting’s daughter.
BYU wrapped up the 2024-25 season with a 13-17 record.
Among the freshmen was Big 12 Freshman of the Year Delaney Gibb, who also earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors. Gibb stood out as one of the top college basketball freshmen this season.
BYU announced that Lee Cummard will serve as interim head coach while the program searches for a permanent replacement for Whiting.
