The New York Jets have a need for cornerbacks as they approach free agency and the draft.
Sauce Gardner is set to come back in 2025, but he’s the only definite option in that sense for Aaron Glenn’s team.
The Jets are anticipated to part ways with D.J. Reed and have therefore been associated with more affordable cornerbacks such as Jourdan Lewis from the Dallas Cowboys.
To predict which cornerbacks the Jets might acquire, it’s essential to closely monitor the Detroit Lions’ lineup. The previous Lions defensive coordinator, Glenn, is well-acquainted with all those players and would know precisely which ones offer the greatest value.
A recent report from Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press suggests that Lions veteran Carlton Davis III may be a potential target for the Jets.
“Ramsey stated that the Lions acquired Davis in the previous offseason, and he assumed the position of the team’s leading cornerback until he fractured his jaw in December while playing against the Buffalo Bills.”
Davis, 28, appeared to align perfectly with Glenn’s assertive defensive strategy centered on man coverage.
The Jets possess a premier corner in Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, a Detroit King alumnus, but corners D.J. Reed and Brandin Echols are poised to hit free agency. Should the Jets aim for a leading name in the cornerback free agent market as a substitute, Davis’ connection with Glenn positions him as an ideal match.
The inquiry is whether the Jets can manage to sign Davis considering their various personnel requirements in other areas of the field.
Spotrac estimates Davis’s market value at $13.8 million annually, suggesting a potential three-year contract worth approximately $41.3 million.
That appears costly for a team with numerous gaps in the roster, but if Glenn believes Davis would be a great match, Mougey may be motivated to facilitate it.
Davis secured a Super Bowl championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, thus he would also carry championship experience.
