BYU Football Announces Captains For Annual Alumni Game
BYU football will host its alumni game at the conclusion of spring ball for the fourth consecutive year.
The annual event, which began in 2022, will return to LaVell Edwards Stadium after a one-year hiatus due to a field renovation. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. (MST) on Friday, March 28, and admission is free for fans.
Three weeks before the game, BYU football revealed the captains for the event.
Austin Collie and Reno Mahe Named Captains for Alumni Game
Former BYU wide receivers Austin Collie (2004, 2007-2008) and Reno Mahe (1998, 2001-2002) will serve as captains for the 2025 Alumni Game.
This marks the first time BYU has chosen non-quarterbacks as captains for the Alumni Game. Previous captains have included former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, Max Hall, John Beck, and Kevin Feterik.
Collie and Mahe are among the top receivers in BYU football history.
Austin Collie holds the program record for most receiving yards in a single season, with 1,538 yards in 2008. Reno Mahe’s 1,211 receiving yards in 2001 rank fourth in program history.
Collie ranks second all-time at BYU with 3,255 career receiving yards, while Mahe sits 13th with 2,163 yards.
Both players went on to have successful NFL careers.
Mahe became a standout return specialist for the Philadelphia Eagles under coach Andy Reid. Collie caught passes from some of the NFL’s all-time great quarterbacks, including Peyton Manning (2009-2012, Indianapolis Colts) and Tom Brady (2013, New England Patriots).
History of BYU Football Alumni Games
The first three Alumni Games have been thrilling, with dramatic finishes.
In the inaugural game, Max Hall threw a Hail Mary touchdown pass to his former teammate Bryan Kehl as time expired, securing a 31-27 win for Team Navy over Team Royal.
The following year, Spencer White intercepted a tipped pass intended for K.O. Kealaluhi, giving Team Navy a 26-20 victory.
Last year, NFL Hall of Fame QB Steve Young made a surprise appearance, throwing the first two passes for Team Royal. Team Navy nearly achieved a three-peat but was stopped at Team Royal’s three-yard line late in the fourth quarter, allowing Team Royal to win 18-13.
