Luka Doncic Praises Los Angeles Lakers For ‘Impressive’ Defense Against Phoenix Suns
Luka Doncic was impressed by the defense played by him and the Los Angeles Lakers against the Phoenix Suns. After the Lakers defeated the Suns 107-96, Doncic spoke to the media and emphasized how crucial it was for the Lakers to secure a victory following a tough road trip in which they lost every game. He praised the Lakers for their defensive efforts in containing the Suns, who boast some of the league’s top offensive players.
“We knew we had to improve. We knew we needed to be more physical, and I think our defense was outstanding today from beginning to end…”
Luka had an exceptional performance himself, recording 33 points (8-20 FG), 11 rebounds, eight assists, and two steals. He and Austin Reaves were the standout performers, combining for 61 of the Lakers’ 106 points. Together, they outscored Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, who managed only 44 points as a trio.
The Lakers managed to limit the Suns to under 100 points. This victory marked a return to their defensive strength, a hallmark of their season. A key factor in the team’s defensive improvement has been the addition of Dorian Finney-Smith from the Nets earlier this season.
Finney-Smith had been sidelined for much of their road trip, during which the Lakers struggled defensively. In his return, he picked up right where he left off, contributing strong defense and finishing with a game-high +16 plus-minus, tied with Luka Doncic.
As more players like LeBron James and Rui Hachimura return from injury, the Lakers are aiming to recover from the setbacks of their recent road trip.
Currently, the Lakers hold the fifth spot in the Western Conference with a 41-25 record, just two games behind the Rockets, Nuggets, and Grizzlies, who are tied with a 43-25 record. If the Lakers go on a successful run in the coming weeks, they could realistically move past these teams to reclaim the second seed.
Doncic has been remarkable since joining the Lakers, as many anticipated, averaging 26.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 1.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game, with shooting splits of 41.1% from the field, 34.5% from three-point range, and 77.7% from the free-throw line.
What has surprised many, however, is Doncic’s defensive commitment. Known for his lackluster defense in the past, Doncic has significantly improved in this area since joining the Lakers. Though not a standout defender, his 6’7″ frame allows him to disrupt offensive players.
The Lakers won’t have much time to celebrate this victory, as they face the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow night at the Crypto.com Arena. With the Spurs missing key players like Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, the Lakers have a prime opportunity to secure another crucial win.
