Detroit Lions Secure Core Players with Major Contract Extensions
The Detroit Lions have locked in several key contributors by awarding them lucrative contract extensions.
Recently, two star NFL players have reset the market for their positions, as running back Saquon Barkley and defensive end Maxx Crosby signed massive new deals.
Barkley now holds the title of the league’s highest-paid running back after inking a two-year, $41.2 million extension, which includes $36 million in fully guaranteed money.
Crosby, meanwhile, has agreed to a three-year, $106.5 million contract extension with $91.5 million guaranteed. At 27 years old, he is now the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
According to the Raiders’ official website, “Since 2019, Crosby ranks first among defensive linemen in tackles for loss (105), fourth in total tackles (364), tied for fourth in sacks (59.5), fourth in quarterback hits (144), and fifth in quarterback pressures (346). He also stands third in franchise history with 59.5 sacks, while his 364 tackles are the most by a Raiders defensive lineman in their first six seasons.”
During the previous season, Crosby registered 7.5 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits, and 35 quarterback pressures.
Since being drafted by the Raiders in 2019, Crosby has compiled 59.5 sacks, 364 tackles (232 solo), 105 tackles for loss, 23 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries over six seasons.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes stated at the scouting combine that the organization has begun the process of securing former Michigan Wolverines defensive lineman Brad Holmes Hutchinson with a long-term contract.
With the contract market set, it is reasonable to expect Hutchinson to seek a four-year deal worth over $140 million.
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs remains under contract through 2026, and the Lions hold the option to extend him for a fifth year after next season.
