The Detroit Lions have established one of the league’s most formidable offensive lines, primarily through the draft.
All four of their returning starters were originally drafted by the team, along with Christian Mahogany, who is currently the top contender to replace former starter Kevin Zeitler.
However, with three of the four returning starters now over 30, age is becoming a concern.
As a result, reinforcing the interior offensive line with a first-round draft pick could be beneficial.
That’s why Detroit selected Alabama’s Tyler Booker with the 28th overall pick in the latest OnSI beat writer mock draft.
“The Lions have built one of the NFL’s most dominant offensive lines through the draft, with Penei Sewell, Taylor Decker, Frank Ragnow, and Graham Glasgow all being homegrown talents,” this writer noted. “Now, with their key players aging and Kevin Zeitler departing for the Titans, the team brings in fresh talent for the interior.”
With beat writers from all 32 teams making selections, Detroit secured a player capable of competing for a starting role immediately. Another prospect, North Dakota State’s Grey Zabel, was taken two picks earlier by the Los Angeles Rams.
The team also considered addressing the EDGE rusher position, with Tennessee’s James Pearce and Texas A&M’s Nic Scourton both available.
Nonetheless, Booker is an ideal addition who can contribute right away following Zeitler’s move to the Tennessee Titans.
A dominant run-blocker, Booker would immediately strengthen Detroit’s offensive line. His addition would create strong competition between him, Graham Glasgow, and Mahogany for the two starting guard spots.
