Lions Can Take Their Time Deciding Jameson Williams’ Future

The 2024 season was a crucial one for Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams. His first two years were hindered by a torn ACL as a rookie, followed by a gambling suspension and the need to refine his skills in Year 2.

From the start of offseason work, Williams appeared to recognize how pivotal his third season was. He carried that momentum into the season, surpassing 1,000 yards for the first time while ranking second in the league in yards per catch (17.3; first among receivers with at least 50 targets). Advanced metrics highlighted his reliability for Jared Goff.

Despite his progress and personal growth in Year 3, Williams encountered a few setbacks. He tested positive for a banned substance, resulting in a two-game suspension. Soon after, a gun-related incident surfaced, though he was not charged and will not face NFL discipline.

Williams is eligible for an extension this offseason, and the Lions are expected to exercise his $15.49 million fifth-year option before May 1.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press recently analyzed whether the Lions should extend Williams now, outlining how discussions are currently unfolding while making his argument.

I’mBirkett acknowledged that picking up Williams’ fifth-year option is an easy decision, as it gives the team more time to determine if he warrants a long-term extension.

Due to factors both within and beyond his control, Williams has had only one standout season in three years. With the wide receiver market rising, the Lions should wait until after next season before committing to a lucrative deal.
