Cowboys’ Potential Trade for Tyreek Hill Backed by Former NFL Players
FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys have the financial flexibility to pursue virtually any acquisition they desire, thanks to their nearly $40 million in available cap space—a figure that ranks them among the top 10 teams in the NFL.
Most analysts agree that the Cowboys have a significant gap at the No. 2 receiver position.
Dak Prescott could use another offensive weapon, and CeeDee Lamb needs a reliable counterpart.
Two former NFL players believe they have the perfect solution:
The Miami Dolphins’ polarizing star, Tyreek Hill.
Former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert has gone as far as predicting the move, though there’s no concrete evidence beyond speculation to support his claim.
“I would not be shocked,” Benkert posted on X, “to see the Dolphins trade Tyreek Hill on draft night. My ideal landing spots for him are Dallas and Baltimore.”
Why the Cowboys?
“With Dallas,” he explained, “they get to add some firepower, which will be essential for competing in their division this year. It would also shift some defensive focus away from CeeDee Lamb—enhancing both of their effectiveness.”
It’s a reasonable argument, but there are three key concerns…
1 – Tyreek Hill carries significant off-field baggage. He’s an exceptional talent, but he often finds himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons.
However, he does appear to have a strong rapport with Micah Parsons, which could help foster positive team chemistry.
2 – While Hill was once regarded as the league’s most electrifying receiver—winning Offensive Player of the Year in 2023—his production at age 31 has started to show signs of decline.
Last season, he recorded 81 catches for 959 yards and six touchdowns. However, some may attribute those numbers to Miami’s quarterback instability, as Tua Tagovailoa was limited to just 11 games.
3 – Hill is owed $28 million this season. His contract does offer flexibility after 2025, and if the Dolphins are eager to move on, Dallas might negotiate for Miami to absorb part of the financial burden.
Cowboys fans would undoubtedly be excited about a receiving duo featuring Hill and Lamb. Such a combination could potentially make Dallas’ receiving corps the most formidable in the league.
But is Miami actually willing to part with him? Apart from Hill’s late-season comments suggesting he wanted out—remarks he later retracted—this idea appears to originate from outside sources rather than internal team discussions.
That is, unless you consider the perspective of Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith, who also supports the move.
Emmitt recently stated, “Maybe we need to go after Tyreek Hill—someone who can stretch the field and allow CeeDee Lamb to operate underneath.”
If Dallas wants to make a bold move, this would certainly qualify.
However, while Emmitt is correct in recognizing the need for more weapons in Prescott’s offense, he may not be factoring in the logistical challenges of such a trade.
Still…
The Cowboys require a deep-threat playmaker and receivers capable of creating separation. So far, Jalen Tolbert, Jonathan Mingo, and other depth options have yet to prove they can fill that role.
Maybe Hill isn’t the ideal target—but the overall concept is undeniably sound.
