Lions Should Dismiss Proposal to Trade Key Cornerback Before 2025

Pro Football Focus has identified the Detroit Lions’ most valuable trade asset for the remainder of the offseason, but moving him would be a serious misstep the team must avoid.

Detroit’s playoff run ended in the divisional round, a disappointing finish after an impressive 2024 campaign. A major factor in their downfall? Defensive injuries, particularly in the secondary.

This offseason, the Lions have successfully strengthened their depth at cornerback through multiple moves, a crucial upgrade for 2025. However, if they wanted to make a major splash, who would they consider trading?

Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus highlighted a player from each team who could still be moved before the season. For Detroit, he believes cornerback Amik Robertson is a prime trade candidate.

“The Lions replaced Carlton Davis III by signing D.J. Reed to a significant contract, but many defensive players are entering the final year of their deals. Robertson appears to be one of the more likely trade pieces.”

While Detroit now has better depth at cornerback, with young players like Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw taking on larger roles, they still need experienced players who know the system. Robertson provides that stability.

Last season, the Lions faced difficulties keeping their defensive starters healthy. Cornerback remains a crucial position in today’s pass-heavy NFL, especially in the NFC North, where quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Jordan Love pose a threat. After witnessing last season’s struggles, Detroit should be hesitant to part ways with any defensive backs.

Robertson is an ideal fit for Detroit’s defense, embodying the team’s tough, resilient identity. His impact was evident when he exited early in the playoff game against Washington with a broken arm—the defense quickly crumbled, highlighting his late-season importance.

This offseason, the Lions have made unexpected changes to their defensive line while prioritizing the secondary. This suggests they are relying on Aidan Hutchinson and underrated defensive linemen to handle the pass rush. For that strategy to succeed, Detroit must maintain a strong secondary.

Trading Robertson makes little sense, as the Lions likely wouldn’t receive much in return. It’s evident he holds more value to Detroit’s 2025 roster as a dependable contributor rather than as trade bait.
