Miller Gardner passed away suddenly while on a trip with family, his parents revealed in a statement on Sunday.

A recent report has disclosed the cause of death for Miller Gardner, the adolescent son of Brett Gardner, a player for the New York Yankees.

Brett, 41, and his spouse Jessica Gardner lost their 14-year-old son due to asphyxiation “following a potential intoxication possibly caused by consuming some food,” stated Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigative Agency to NBC News on Monday, March 24.

PEOPLE has additionally contacted the agency.

Garcia stated that a toxicology test and an official autopsy are still awaited. The outcomes may require two to three months.

On March 23, the official Yankees X account posted a statement from the couple, revealing that their son passed away unexpectedly during a trip with family and friends.

“With deep sorrow, we are heartbroken to share the loss of our youngest son, Miller,” the couple stated. “He was just 14 years old and departed from us far too early after becoming unwell alongside several other relatives during a holiday.”

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st,” they said. “A beloved son and brother,” the two said, “we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile.”

Hunter Gardner, the couple’s other son, was born in 2007, and they also took the opportunity to thank “all who have reached out to offer support and encouragement during this difficult time.” “We are sure that our friends, family, and faith will support us during this unfathomable tragedy. As we share their sorrow, we send our sympathies to Miller’s friends and teammates as well as to all other families who have lost a child way too soon,” they said. “Please respect our wishes for privacy as we mourn and search for healing.” The cause of their son’s death and the location of their vacation at the time of the occurrence were not disclosed by the couple.
