The tight end position remains one of the Las Vegas Raiders’ strongest groups, but they continue to bolster their depth. With Harrison Bryant moving to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, the Raiders were in need of a new TE3.

On Tuesday, the Raiders confirmed they had reached an agreement with veteran tight end Ian Thomas. Thomas, who was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, has spent his entire career with the team.

During his time with Carolina, Thomas proved to be a productive player, starting 54 games over seven seasons.

In 2022, the Panthers rewarded him with a three-year, $16.95 million contract extension, but injuries soon became a problem. He spent time on Injured Reserve in each of the past two seasons and played only five games in 2024.

When healthy, Thomas can be a solid contributor for the Raiders, which could fuel speculation about a potential trade involving former second-round pick Michael Mayer.

Brock Bowers is the clear leader in the tight end room, but Mayer was highly regarded coming out of Notre Dame. He might benefit from moving to a team where he can be the primary tight end.

By adding Thomas, the Raiders may find it easier to part ways with Mayer if a compelling trade offer arises. While the terms of Thomas’ contract with Las Vegas are unclear, it’s likely to be a one-year deal.
