Lions Star Gives Candid Reaction to Losing Ben Johnson

The Detroit Lions are preparing for major changes in 2025 after offensive coordinator Ben Johnson departed for the division-rival Chicago Bears. One of the team’s key players is openly admitting how tough the loss is.

During an appearance on FanDuel’s “Up & Adams,” Lions tight end Sam LaPorta expressed his happiness for Johnson, who secured the Bears’ head coaching job earlier in the offseason. However, he also didn’t shy away from sharing how difficult it was to see him go.

“Of course, happy for Ben. He was one of the big reasons that they brought me into the Lions. Nothing but respect for him, but again, on Sunday afternoons this fall, there’ll be friends turned to enemies, I guess.

“It hurts, of course. You spend a lot of time with these people, invest a lot of energy and effort and hard work together. It’s mutual. You’re excited that he’s going to go run his own team and have a lot on his plate. Very exciting times for him, and it’s exciting times for us too as we turn towards our new staff and have a bright future together as well.”

The Lions selected LaPorta in 2023, a year after Johnson became the team’s offensive coordinator. Given Johnson’s role in the offense, it’s likely he had a major influence on that pick, making their connection even stronger.

Detroit’s players have shown plenty of appreciation for Johnson since his departure. Facing him twice a year in the NFC North only adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

The Lions opted to replace Johnson with an external hire, meaning LaPorta and his teammates will have to adjust to a new offensive system. Regardless of the changes, the tight end should continue to play a major role in the offense, having totaled 1,615 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two NFL seasons.
